HISTORY OF COYHAIQUE

Founded October 12th in 1929, oficially on the name of Baquedano, in honour of a military commander of the chilean army, Mr. Manuel Baquedano González. From everywhere of the country, post messages and letters where sent to Baquedano, though they never arrived to the village in the south and were delivered to the northern village of Baquedano, located in the region of Antofagasta, right in the very north of Chile. The chilean authorities on behalf of a law in Jan of1934 changed the name to Coyhaique, as the name did not exist all over the country apart of having meaning in the Tehuelche language.

Located 68 ms west of Puerto Aisen, it is the capital of the XI Region of Chile since 1974. Today it is the capital of the Carlos Ibañez del Campo Region. Its inhabitants come to 45.000. The city itself has important comercial activities and tourism is increasing, specially for flyfishing lovers.

Outside of Coyhaique there are plenty of rivers, waterfalls, lagunes and lakes, all of them excellent for flyfishing.
